Kat & Matt (Our Music
My Body) &
Sexual Assault Prevention at Gigs

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST!

It's nice to be back after a taking a week off for the holidays and my birthday!

Kat Stuehrk of Our Music My Body

Kat Stuehrk of Our Music My Body

This week, I am chatting with two great punx, human beings, activists, and prevention specialists. Kat Stuehrk and Matt Walsh run the nonprofit, Our Music My Body. Our Music My Body is a Chicago-based collaborative campaign led by Between Friends & Rape Victim Advocates to raise awareness about sexual harassment in the music scene. They do this work because they believe everyone deserves to feel comfortable and safe when they go to a concert or festival. OurMusicMyBody works with festival and venue staff, musicians, and music fans alike to create fun and consensual music experiences for all.

Matt Walsh of Our Music My Body

Matt Walsh of Our Music My Body

We had a great chat the other night about the work they do, the challenges of confronting misogyny and harassment, and what it looks like to conscientiously attend gigs and festivals. It's work that I am personally dedicated to, and am thankful there are many others doing similar work in their communities! I hope you enjoy this chat - it's a topic that is very important to me and Katy - and if you would like to get involved, check out their contact info below!

Ben McNamee &
Professional Labor Unions

WELCOME BACK TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

benmcnamee.jpg

Ben McNamee is an Academic Advisor and Student Services Specialist at UMass Boston, he also grew up punk, straight edge, and an avid ska kid. Ben and I work together! It's awesome. We have also presented on how punk culture influences the work we do with our students, and how we use what we've learned through the years as punks to educate and grow in our communities.

In this episode, we get into Ben's career as an academic advisor, and an advocate for supporting transfer students, as well as the work he does supporting our professional union at work. He explains the difficulties of maintaining a union, as well as the struggles of beginning one - if someone were interested in learning how to do so. And we chat a bit about music along the way! It's a fun time. It was great to sit down in my office at UMass Boston and have this chat with Ben and I hope you like it!

EPISODE NOTES:
- Ben attending the University of Rhode Island’s graduate program - check it out!
- Ben's favorite ska band is The Flaming Tsunamis - dude loves them.
- Growing up in Connecticut gave Ben much access to Youth Crew culture.
- I shared a little bit of hype about my friends in the ska band, Target for Tomorrow and the Horns of Destruction.
- Check out some information on our local union, the Massachusetts Teachers Association.
- The upcoming Supreme Court session will hear a case focused on Union dues.
- He might not suggest it for everyone, but Ben reads “Salad Days" every year.
- Ben is also a big fan of the writings of Greg Graffin from Bad Religion.
- It's quite fitting that we ran this episode shortly after the Fifth of November, since Ben's favorite movie is V for Vendetta.
- Ben suggests checking out the various NPR news podcasts, Star Wars 7x7, Punk News, Grown Ups Read Things they wrote as kids!
- Don't miss out on some great tunes that Ben has loved over the years, including At All Costs, Hostage Calm, and The World is a Beautiful Place and I am No Longer Afraid to Die.

MUSIC NOTES:
- This week you get to hear tunes from the new Pendejo album, "Tio," which is an homage to the lead singer/guitarist, Chris's uncle, Harold, and his life in Puerto Rico.
- If you like what you hear, head on over to PendejoMusic.bandcamp.com! While there, you can check out the band's debut EP, "Good Citizen," which features the opening/closing track on the podcast, "Citizen."
- And if you give the band a LIKE on Facebook, you can check out a sweet comic that is based on the album as well!

CHECK OUT THE NEW SPOTIFY PLAYLIST!

ADVERTISING NOTES:
- Today's episode is selfishly sponsored by my own nonprofit, The Art of Survival! You can check out more about what we do for survivors of trauma, by visiting www.artissurvival.com.
- We are back after taking a few months off from sharing stories and we are excited to continue sharing powerful and important experiences from people all over the world.

Student Affairs
Grad School Prep, part 2

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

This is PART TWO of the conversation on Grad School preparation that started last week, so I STRONGLY suggest that if you haven't listened to the first part, check that one out first!

On this episode, we dig into professional expectations, whether a Masters degree is necessary for entry-level positions in Higher Education, as well as a bunch of advice for folks seeking grad school is thrown out and it's a lot of good stuff!

The five folks I speak with on this episode are all FRESH in the field, with no one having more than 3 years of post-grad professional experience. Granted, not all experiences will be represented here, but there truly are some dynamic perspectives and critical critiques of the field as a whole. So I hope you enjoy the rest of this chat!

Grad School Prep, part 1

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

A few weeks ago, I reached out to the Millennials in Student Affairs Facebook Group and shared an old blog post that I wrote three years ago with some tips on navigating and researching graduate programs in Student Affairs in Higher Education. From the response this post always receives, I wanted to also ask if any of my recent graduates/new professionals were willing to chat with me about their experiences in grad school. The five folks I speak with on this episode are all FRESH in the field, with no one having more than 3 years of post-grad professional experience. Granted, not all experiences will be represented here, but there truly are some dynamic perspectives and critical critiques of the field as a whole. So I hope you enjoy this first part of the chat. And stay tuned for part two next week!

MUSIC NOTE:
- You get to hear some tunes from the band, Neaux, which just released its debut LP, "Chain Up the Sun," through The Native Sound. Visit their bandcamp page here!
- Neaux is the new fuzzy shoegaze band featuring former VersaEmerge, frontwoman, Sierra Kay. Neaux is a different direction than the former band, but I honestly prefer this direction and it perfectly fits the trope of The Native Sound.
- Snag some physical copies of the new album - including an ultra clear and half pink/half white vinyl pressings - NOW!

ADVERTISING NOTE:

Here is an EXTRA episode of the podcast this week! Katy and Lauren had A LOT to talk about this week and we wanted to make sure that you got to hear this powerful, transformational section of their conversation in its entirety. They dive even deeper into their identities as queer femmes and how those identities manifest in the hardcore scene and in social justice realms in general. There are a few moments of true discovery in these 30 minutes and it's pretty wonderful to hear.

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST!

14484803_10153729697886277_8215746059205411909_n.jpg

This week, Katy Hamm returns as the host of the podcast to bring you a special chat with a very badass guest. Lauren Kashan is the lead singer for the melodic hardcore band, Sharptooth. Lauren also holds a Herpetology degree from Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland. She is a self-proclaimed Reptile Lady and works as an Environmental educator, regularly visiting schools, libraries, and other spaces where she teaches folks about reptiles and other fun creatures.

In this episode, Katy and Lauren bond over their shared love of hardcore music, wanting more femme representation in hardcore, and how fighting the patriarchy often starts in the pit. Katy's return to hosting duties is a doozy this week and you are bound to love it! And you get to hear some of the kickass tunes from the new Sharptooth album, Clever Girl, which is out THIS FRIDAY through Pure Noise Records.

And stay tuned later this week for an extended episode of Katy and Lauren's chat - cuz they just had SO MUCH to talk about this week!

EPISODE NOTES:
- Just a heads up - there is A LOT of explicit language on this episode.
- I absolutely love that Sharptooth's name is a reference to Land Before Time - because it's one of my favorite movies from my childhood.
- And the new album, "Clever Girl," is a reference to Jurassic Park - because after all, Lauren loves Velociraptors.
- Lauren suggests checking out the Gone series from Michael Grant.
- Both Katy and Lauren have recently gone through the Dave Eggars book, "The Circle," which was adapted and released as a film this year.
- Another commonality among Katy and Lauren is their love for the album, "Diamond" by Stick to Your Guns.
- Adding more to their shared obsessions, each also have a tattoo for the band Every Time I Die - Katy's being a quote from the song "Ebolarama," and Lauren's being an inner lip tattoo of the title of the band's debut LP, Hot Damn!
- in a not-so surprising turn of events, it is not shocking to learn that the Herpetologist and massive animal/reptile lover/educator, Lauren, owns every single Animorphs book ever released.

Francesca Olsen (House Sparrow)
& Digital Citizenship

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

Francesca Olsen is a multi-talented higher education professional who works at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. She is also the frontwoman for the western Mass two-piece band, House Sparrow. In this episode of the podcast, Craig and Francesca dive into the world of social media in higher education, as well as what it is like to tour and play gigs as a professional staff member. And you get to hear some tunes from the new House Sparrow album, "Eat Honey, Taste Mud," which is out this Friday!

EPISODE NOTES:
- Francesca discusses her love of the Western Mass with much fondness because she's at the forefront of the scene - alongside Sounds and Tones Records label-runner, Chris Hantman.
- Check out Francesca's DIY blog, Digital Wheatpaste, for all things within the DIY subcultures of New England and beyond!
- Make sure to read up on the new House Sparrow album over at New Noise Magazine!
- If you've already through "1984," make sure you give "Without You, There is No Us," by Suki Kim a read and then reach out to Francesca so you can talk about it!
- Because of this conversation, Francesca turned me onto the 99% Invisible podcast and I'm now obsessed with it!
- While Francesca is an all-time fan of Guided by Voices, she strongly urges you to check out the lovely new jams from Alvvays.

MUSIC NOTES:
- You got to hear a bunch of tracks from the new House Sparrow album, "Eat Honey, Taste Mud," which is out this Friday through Sounds and Tones Records!
- Visit HouseSparrowMusic.com or housesparrowmusic.bandcamp.com to stream and/or purchase the new album right now!
- You can also watch the video House Sparrow's song, "You'll See Colors."
- Also, as an extra note, you might be able to hear some music in the background while I'm doing the ads during this episode - the music playing on my turntable was the 2016 pg.lost album, "Versus." Some damn-fine post rock instrumental tunes.

ADVERTISING NOTES:
- This week we hyped up Half Access - which is the nonprofit founded by our eighth guest, Cassie Wilson. Half Access was started with the purpose of amassing as much venue accessibility information as possible to inform venues across the country and the world about how to better construct and renovate spaces to accommodate the needs of disabled music goers.
- Visit HalfAccess.org/contact to reach out to Cassie and volunteer your time to supporting the cause of making music venues for inclusive and accessible so that our communities can truly thrive.

Xavier Pastrano

Vinyl

WELCOME TO AN X-TRA SPECIAL EPISODE OF THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

Screen Shot 2017-10-12 at 12.10.43 AM.png

EPISODE NOTES:
So this week, I had a great conversation with my guest, Xavier Pastrano. So much so that we had a couple tangents that lead into up discussing the topic that brought us together - vinyl records! I recognize that this is going to be a very niche conversation, so feel free to skip it and wait for the next episode on Tuesday. But if you liked listening to me chat with Xavier, you'll like this EXTRA eduPUNX episode.

I'm gonna try to do more one-off mini-episodes like this one because many of my conversations get on tangents and I just end up scrapping the stuff that doesn't fit into the topic. But NOW, I'm likely going to keep this format moving forward.

Cheap pop note: Make sure you follow Xavier on Instagram at @0staxxofwaxx0, and me at @CrigBididman.

MUSIC NOTES:
- Once again, you get to hear more tunes from the new album, "Omnicide," from Xavier's band, Skin of Our Teeth. You can purchase a digital copy or a CD at skinofourteeth.bandcamp.com.

017: Xavier Pastrano (Skin of Our Teeth) & High School Poetry

017:
Xavier Pastrano
(Skin of Our Teeth) &
High School Poetry

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST!

18301717_1424590294246412_2482739247214611784_n.jpg

This week, we bring you a very chill conversation with Xavier Pastrano, who is the bassist and lead singer of the sludge/stoner metal band, Skin of Our Teeth. Xavier is also a high school English teacher in Sioux Falls, South Dakota! The dude is incredibly passionate about poetry and literature and we connect on our shared experiences as English teachers - since I taught high school English for a couple of years as well.

We also get into race relations a bit, since Xavier was raised as a mixed kid by a single white mother. And since Xavier lives in a very conservative state, we get into the politics of being a more progressive educator in areas where inclusiveness might not be a priority in the education system. Needless to say, we had a lot to discuss - so much so that there will be a bonus episode later this week of just us talking about music and vinyl!

EPISODE NOTES:
- Xavier discusses how his Black Like Me unit with his students was deeply impactful for his students.
- It was powerful to hear how Xavier's students reacted to the racist murder of Emmett Till.
- Xavier and I have a shared love of the post punk/dark wave band She Wants Revenge.
- I was glad to learn that Xavier took one of his students' favorite artists, Twenty-One Pilots, and demonstrated the poetic devices at play in their song, “Car Radio."
- I discuss how I used four songs in Thrice's "Alchemy Index" album as a demonstration of Shakespearian sonnets.
- It might not be the recipe that Xavier references in the conversation, but here is a recipe for eggless egg salad!
- In classic English teacher fashion, Xavier lists "Catcher in the Rye" and "Perks of Being a Wallflower" as two of his favorite books of all time.
- For his all-time music favorites, Xavier displays his true varied taste in music by naming, Baroness (specifically the "Blue" album) and No Doubt (specifically “Tragic Kingdom”) as the top of the list.
- Make sure to check out new album from Monolord (“Rust”), and the uniquely polarizing, Zeal and Ardor ("Devil is Fine").

skinofourteeth.jpg

MUSIC NOTES:
- This week you get to hear tunes from the new album by stoner/sludge band, Skin of Our Teeth, titled, "Omnicide," which is due out on November 10th. Xavier is the lead singer and bassist (he also does some drums too) of this two-man band; yes, only two people are making all that noise you're hearing throughout the episode. They even trade off between drum and bass throughout their sets, which is pretty damn sweet.
- If you like what you hear, visit skinofourteeth.bandcamp.com to snag yourself a CD or a digital copy of the album now!

ADVERTISING NOTES:
- Since Xavier and I discuss the creativity of some of our students, I wanted to hype the work of one of my former students once again!
- If you need some design work done, check out the work by my buddy and former student, Nevan Doyle! He is one of the best up-and-coming graphic designers and artists today!
- Visit Mishko.co to check out his artwork, videos, and music! You can commission him to create artwork and/or videos for your band, brand, program, company, and/or office! Make it happen!

Anaëlle Séïde &
Peer-to-Peer Social Justice Education

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST!

IMG_9848.jpg

This week is a special episode of the podcast because it's the FIRST episode where the reins are handed over to Katy Hamm! You might remember them from our 14th episode, where we discussed mental health in the workplace. Well now Katy is the host, chatting with one of their students, Anaëlle Séïde!

Anaëlle is a senior at Lesley University studying Biology and Cognitive Neuroscience. She is also a co-director of the peer social justice education organization at Lesley called CommonLYNX - which is a fantastic pun since the Lesley mascot is the Lynx! Katy and Anaëlle dig into the details of what it takes to run a peer mentoring program based around diversity, inclusion, and identity development. They also break down, from the student perspective, the barriers that exist between student and admin in terms of professional boundaries and respect.

EPISODE NOTES:

- Anaëlle is a big Beyonce and Chance the Rapper fan, and who could blame her?
- In case you were wondering, yes - Family Matters was and is a badass TV show that didn't skip a beat on social commentary back in the day.
- If you're down for a new read, check out "Home Going," by Yaa Gyasi, which sounds like a fascinating read.
- And if you wanna dig into Anaëlle's favorite book of all-time, get yourself a copy of "Sister Outsider," by the incomparable Audre Lorde.
- You know you wanna listen to some Lauryn Hill right now - we could all use some Lauryn in our lives these days.

MUSIC NOTES:

nervous dater.jpg

You can purchase/stream a digital copy (at a name-your-own-price) from Nervous Dater by visiting nervousdater.bandcamp.com or snag a physical copy from Counter Intuitive Records at CounterIntuitiveRecords.com!
- You also got to hear the song, "Forever Please," by Pictures of Vernon, which is also on Counter Intuitive Records, and can be snagged at their store as well! You can learn more about the band by visiting picturesofvernon.bandcamp.com.

15:
Matt Nazario-Miller &
Social Media Marketing in Student Affairs

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

Matt Nazario-Miller is a fantastic human being who has turned his loves of the marketing world and student affairs into a full-time gig by becoming the Social Media Specialist at UC Davis for their office of Student Affairs Marketing Communications. As someone who did a graduate thesis on student engagement through social media, I was eager to chat with Matt about the topic of social media because even I have a bunch to learn.

This is one of the most focused conversations of the podcast so far - with great reason, because it's important to focus on how to truly engage students through social media. Plain and simply, it isn't easy - but there are some great tips and suggestions discussed throughout this chat if you are making changes to your approach to social. We also get into it about the perceptions of millennial professionals in student affairs - and in the world, in general.

EPISODE NOTES:
- If you want to check out more about the work that Matt does at UC Davis, visit his office's website and explore the services they offer!
- Matt is the head moderator of the Millennials in Student Affairs Facebook page - so if you meet this parameter, please check out the community!
- Matt just finished reading "The Book of Joy," which is a series of conversations between the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu.
- I was stoked to hear that Matt has been enjoying Gravity Falls lately because it's an amazing cartoon.
- He also turned me onto the new show, "Gaycation," which stars Ellen Page, so I really need to start watching this one!
- Matt, like the rest of the world, is obsessed with the new Paramore album, "After Laughter," so if you've slept on it, you really gotta remedy that.
- But Matt's ride-or-die music love is Best Coast! West Coast, best coast!

14: Katy Hamm & Mental Health in the Workplace

WELCOME BACK TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST!

This week is a special episode for a few reasons! Primarily, I get to chat with my best friend and partner, Katy Hamm. Also, it's a week where we get to talk about one of my favorite topics - mental health. Well, it's one of OUR favorite topics because Katy and I talk about mental health almost every single day - so it was nice to record a chat with them this week.

Katy is the Student Activities Coordinator at Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass - where feelings and mental health are consistent topics of conversation. Katy does a lot of work to destigmatize mental health in the workplace, so they're bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to this conversation. And we hope you enjoy this week's episode!

CONTENT WARNING: We dive into the topics of depression, anxiety, traumas, PTSD, and suicidality within this episode, which might be triggering for some listeners.

EPISODE NOTES:
- Last week was Suicide Prevention Week, and in honor of that, I wrote a blog post about managing mental health in the workplace for my friends in Presence. You should definitely look at this conversation as an extension of this post.
- Back before we started dating, Katy and I wrote a fun collaborative blog post about the healing power of music and how it got both of us into the field.
- Katy works at Lesley University, which is where expressive arts therapy was created! Lots of feelings at Lesley.
- Katy’s wrote a powerful post about loss.
- Here is a blog post I wrote about my mental health.
- Make sure to know your rights if you suffer with mental illness - the ADA can be your friend.
- I love that Katy and I are both big fans of the book, The Virgin Suicides - kind of ironic for this week's topic, but such a powerful story.
- 30 Rock is a very important and influential TV show for Katy - who loves a lot of TV.
- It's sort of telling that Katy's favorite movie is Idiocracy - such a wonderful allegory of today's political climate.
- If you know Katy, you know their favorite band to see live is Every Time I Die. And lately they've been all about the newer pop punk band, Waterparks!

13: Greg Nahabedian (Dérive) & DIY Ethics in 2017

WELCOME TO A NEW EPISODE OF THE EDUPUNX PODCAST!

10873395_10205713559901196_4964597208883664963_o.jpg

This week is a real fun and lively chat with musician, Greg Nahabedian, of the art-punk/hardcore band, Dérive. Greg is an incredibly interesting human being and a multi-talented musician, who also teaches piano to people of all ages.

Greg and their fiancee, Chelsea, came over to my apartment to record this episode, and we got into a lot of different topics - from Greg's early days breaking into the music industry as a drummer-for-hire, to attending Hampshire College for music composition, and into their life as a DIY punk artist traveling the country on self-booked tours. We also get into a bit of faith, queer issues, as well as why piano and classical music isn't dead! You also get to hear a lot of music from their band's new album, "Instantly Black the Goodness," so get ready for some tunes on this one!

EPISODE NOTES:
- You can check out Greg's undergrad thesis/melologue, by visiting his bandcamp page at gregnahabedian.bandcamp.com. This is truly one of the most unique pieces of music you'll hear.
- There is also a video of them performing the entire thing with an orchestra they put together.
- Greg, Chelsea, and I get into the complexities of identifying as a queer person while functioning and presenting in a hetero relationship, something I have written about in the past!
- Since we're both fans of the band, mewithoutYou, I knew it was only a matter of time before we were discussing Sufism and the part it plays in the band's fourth album, "It’s all Crazy! It's All False! It's All a Dream!," as well as in Greg's life.
- Listen to more classical music like Charles Mingus, George Crumb, Philip Glass, and Meredith Monk
- Greg attended the independent, collaborative high school, the Pinkerton Academy.
- In keeping with the tradition of using unique artworks as inspiration, Greg remembers the widely imaginative “Blood and Guts in High School,” by Kathy Acker, as a book that sticks out most vividly to them.
- Greg urges folks to check out "Atlas: An Opera in Three Parts," by Meredith Monk. Here is a link to the entire thing on Youtube.

10: Dillon Nettles &
Modern Segregation

WELCOME BACK TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

Dillon Nettles is the Community Programs Director for the Montgomery Education Foundation (MEF) in Montgomery, Alabama. Dillon has lived in the south his entire life, and the timing of the heinous, racist, and bigoted events this weekend in Charlottesville, he shares his thoughts with me!

We also dig into his work at the MEF and what got him into the education field, as well as what keeps him doing this work in spite of the various systems of racialized oppression and segregation that still exist and persist in America in 2017. This is a fascinating conversation and I am so excited to share it with you all.

EPISODE NOTES:

- Check out the fantastic work that Dillon and his colleagues do at the Montgomery Education Foundation by visiting www.montgomeryed.org.
- Dillon and some of his colleagues have a blog focused on progressive work in the South, so check out the forewordsouth.com!

- Dillon is currently jamming out to the new SZA album, "CTRL"
- A massive Beyonce fan, Dillon is all about her album, “4,” and especially the track, "Countdown."
- He claims the book that changed the game for him was, "I Know Why the Cage Bird Sings," by Maya Angelou.
- Also, if you haven't seen it already, Dillon suggests checking out "Girl's Trip!"

9: Greg Jungwirth &
Being a Doctor

WELCOME BACK TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST!

Here is Greg and his wife, Tracy!

Here is Greg and his wife, Tracy!

This week I am chatting with one of my eldest friends, Greg Jungwirth! Greg and I go way back - all the way back to McNary High School in Keizer, Oregon. Back then it was a lot of playing poker on the weekends, making crappy movies, and playing pickup sports whenever we could. Today, we're both very educated and Greg is now a Resident Physician at Valley Medical Center in Renton, Washington!

While I was (and am) a major goofball, Greg is the smartest person I know - while also being a goofball. So it was very cool to have a serious conversation, as adults, about healthcare and what it's like maneuvering the complicated minefield of being a doctor. I learned SO MUCH in this conversation, as we dove into the shady backroom deals that were being made in the recent attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and what that uncertainty looked like in his medical center. I hope you enjoy learning today!

EPISODE NOTES:
Here's some stuff that Greg and I mentioned during this episode!
- Check out Greg's physician profile at Valley Medical center by visiting their site!
- Greg makes a great reference to a recent episode of Adam Ruins Everything, which focused on the costs of hospitals - you can check out a clip of this episode here.
- A big James bond fan, Greg ranks his favorites as “Skyfall," “The Man with the Golden Gun,” and “Goldeneye," which in all fairness is the only answer.
- Greg and I are both big nerds for the album, “Deja Entendu,” by Brand New - takes me back.
- I genuinely did not know that Greg was a big Kurt Vonnegut fan, but I was glad to hear that he also loved the lesser known brilliant piece, "Godbless You, Mr. Rosewater," which contains a lot of great messages that we could use today.
- Another consistency in our friendship is our love of the movie, "Snatch," which is Greg's favorite movie, and my second favorite - only behind "the Big Lebowski."

7:
Josh Odam (Free Negro University)
&
DIY Activism

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST!

I am so stoked to share this week's conversation with Josh Odam. Josh and I met during my time as a grad student at UMass Amherst, where he was an undergraduate student. Through our interactions, I quickly learned about the poise and passion he possessed. It was magnetic.

Since I left the Amherst community, I stayed in the UMass family - as I now work at UMass Boston - and I have kept in close touch with Josh as he has developed his brand of DIY activism through a clothing line he created. Josh started Free Negro University as a way to spread some strength and solidarity to his friends and community members in Amherst and beyond.

Josh and I dig deep into the politics of race in America - especially in regard to the education system. Seeing as Josh is now a graduate student in Labor Studies, his perspectives on the intersections of race and the work force are incredibly nuanced and embattled. This was an informative and fun conversation and we hope you enjoy it!

EPISODE NOTES:
- Early on in the chat, Josh discusses the impact of the organization, Harlem Mothers SAVE, and how it cultivated him into the man he is today. Check out more information on them by visiting
harlemmotherssave.org.
- Josh also credits his time at the Institute for Responsible Citizenship for creating a numbers of the relationships that lead to the creation of Free Negro University.
- Here is a great interview on how Free Negro University was created.
- Check out this piece that ran about Josh when he was campaigning for student trustee at UMass Amherst.
- And here is another article on when he and a number of other student orchestrated a sitdown protest for UMass Amherst to be declared a sanctuary campus.
- Check out two of Josh's favorite books, “This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed," by Charles E. Cobb, Jr., as well as "The Bluest Eye," by Toni Morrison
- If you haven't listened to “The Low-End Theory,” by A Tribe Called Quest, have you ever really lived?
- Josh and I are both big professional wrestling fans, and we both love Shinsuke Nakamura.
- You can watch Josh's favorite film of all-time, the Blaxploitation film, "The Spook Who Sat by the Door," in its entirety on YouTube!
- While we couldn't track down the exact article on colleges as plantations, the recent book from Craig Steven Wilder, "Ebony and Ivy: Race, Slavery, and the Troubled History of America's Universities" is a great look into the topic.
- Make sure to follow Josh on Instagram or Facebook by searching "Free Negro University."

a1728580056_16.jpg

MUSIC NOTES:
- The intro and outro of the podcast feature the song, "List of Demands (Reparations)," by Saul Williams - which is apt given Josh's reference to the list of demands that the Black students at UMass Amherst in the 1960s presented to the campus and were still unresolved over 50 years later.
- Big thanks to our friends at Counter Intuitive Records - a DIY record label in Massachusetts that is dedicating to supporting new and up-and-coming bands - this week we feature a song from the folks in Sleeping Patterns.
- "Raindance" is off the new album, "A Little Blood Never Hurt Anyone" from Sleeping Patterns, which you can order a physical or digital copy from Sleeping Patterns by visiting SleepingPatterns.bandcamp.com or from Counter Intuitive Records at CounterIntuitiveRecords.com!

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

Strap yourself in! This one is a bit longer than usual - and that's because we spoke with not one, but FIVE people this week! And I use "we" because this week my partner, Katy Hamm, joins in on the conversation!

While on vacation to Orlando, Florida, we took a day or so and visited St. Petersburg, Florida and connected with some of our friends at Presence! Presence is a web and mobile software platform that helps institutions identify ways to increase student engagement, better allocate resources, enhance assessment practices, and promote opportunities, ultimately improving outcomes and retention.

Beyond all that mumbo jumbo, Presence is one of the most innovative education-based startups in the field today. The organization is growing at a rapid rate, having been contracted to over 100 campuses, and with like a bajillion donors and investors!

And yet, it all started VERY DIY roots by CEO, Reuben Pressman, who you get to hear a lot from on this episode!

EPISODE NOTES:
- Make sure to visit Presence.io to learn more about Presence and to schedule a demo of their product today!
[NOTE: Craig mistakenly gives the wrong website address in the podcast episode, but this is the correct site.]
- Also, check out the blog that Presence runs and you can read up on all of the good things that Kayley has to share with the world!
- Don't forget about social media! Give Presence a follow - @HelloPresence on Instagram and Twitter!
- We only got to speak with five members of the Presence crew, and you can learn more about them by checking out their site!

MUSIC NOTES:
- All of the music played on today's epsiode comes from the new EP that I released on Friday! The EP is called, "Farewell," and it dedicated to the memory of my father, Orrin Wayne Bidiman, who died of lung cancer in October 2015.
- In the intro and outro of the episode, you hear clips from the first single of the EP, "Active Ghosts."
- In the first ad break, you can hear the instrumentals from the title track, and in the lead up to the music break, you can hear instrumentals from my cover of "Enamor Me," by Pianos Become the Teeth.
- The music break features my second single from the EP, "Bastard Son." This track was produced by WLDMND in what is a preview of a project to come from both of us!
- If you like what you heard, please visit anotherpoormusician.bandcamp.com to listen to the entire EP. While there, you can download the album for free and/or purchase a physical copy on vinyl or CD! You can also stream the EP on Spotify! It's super easy!

ADVERTISING NOTES:
- Today's sponsorship comes from my good friend, Katy Weaver of Katy Weaver Photography. If you are in need of portraits, headshots, couples/engagements photos, or even a wedding, Katy is the perfect photographer for you!
- I have known Katy for a decade and have done a number of different types of photoshoots with her over the years. She is one of my most favorite human beings to work with in a creative capacity - she even provided the artwork for my new EP, "Farewell," which is out NOW!!
- Visit KatyWeaver.com to check out her IMMENSE catalog of work!
