70: Clare Cady - Campus Food Banks & Crossfit

July 18, 2019  /  Craig Bidiman

70: Clare Cady - Campus Food Banks & Crossfit

IMG_7601.JPG

Clare Cady is the founder of the Colleges & Universities Food Bank Alliance (CUFBA) - she’s also an all-around badass. Clare and I go way back to our days at Oregon State University - where we met and became quick friends! In this episode, Clare shares her experiences with homelessness, joblessness, and food insecurity. She explores how the creation of CUFBA has impacted many college communities and the lives of even more students. We even dig deep into our mental illness similarities and what it’s like having a bipolar brain.

Clare and I also get to nerd out about fitness - explicitly about crossfit and weightlifting. We have both found community and support through our crossfit families and it’s great to discuss that together. Hope you enjoy this chat because it was great to catch up with Clare a bit!

Also, a note on my audio for the episode - my usual mic WAS plugged in but my recording equipment chose to record from the computer’s built-in mic instead - so it’s a little scratchy on my end!

MUSIC NOTE:
- This week you got to hear tunes from the new Personal Best album, “What You At,” which was recently released on Sheer Luck Records.
- Out of Portsmouth, United Kingdom, Personal Best is self-described as “classic rock for tragic lesbians,” which is fitting because the band is full of classic rock vibes and solos packaged within a brandishing of new wave emo/rock structures.
- On this episode, you got to hear the tracks, “Jennifer,” “Love Letter,” and “Baby.” You can check out the album through Personal Best’s Bandcamp page, and through all of the streaming platforms! While there, you can snag a vinyl or CD copy of the album as well!

69: Sarah Desmarais (Fucko) - It's Never too Late to Start a Band

Copy of f-5.jpg

WELCOME BACK TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

Sarah Desmarais is the guitarist and vocalist for the Massachusetts-based band, Fucko. Sarah also works in marketing for America’s Test Kitchen - which is something I learned early in the conversation and it wound up steering the beginning of the episode. Sarah and i discuss what it’s like picking up an instrument (guitar) a little later than folks typically pick it up and start noodling around. Having also delayed my guitar learning til my 20s, I could relate to Sarah a good deal - especially around starting a band a tad later as well.

Hope you enjoy this first episode back in over 6 weeks, but we will be back consistently every other week from here on out! Enjoy!

a2646959798_16.jpg

MUSIC NOTE:
- This week you got to hear tunes from the new Fucko album, “Social Climber,” which was released this month on Midnight Werewolf records.
- Fucko presents a fuzzy/noisy indie pop sound that bridges the gaps between garage rock and pop - it’s a wonderful spin of the genre.
- On this episode, you got to hear the tracks, “Used to Be” and “In That Doorway.” You can check out the album through Fucko’s Bandcamp page, and through all of the streaming platforms!

68: Chris Lee-Rodriguez (Really From & I Kill Giants) & the Pedagogy of Nostalgia

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

chris lee.jpg

Chris Lee-Rodriguez is a brilliant musician, educator, and all-around good person. Chris is the guitarist and vocalist for the Boston-based jazzy emo band, Really From, and previously lead the math punk act, I Kill Giants. Chris recently released his first solo project with an EP called, “It Could Happen,” which he self-released on May 3. You will hear a number of these tracks throughout the episode!

Chris teaches young people how to play guitars and a number of other instruments - an experience that he reflects on in detail in this episode. This conversation also covers a lot of arenas of interest to our listeners including how Hurricane Maria impacted him and his family in Puerto Rico, to his disgust for capitalism and Shark Tank (to my chagrin), as well as Chris’ three pieces of being a good person.

This episode was recorded in a practice space - where other bands were practicing, so you may hear random bouts of song in the background here and there.

MUSIC NOTE:
- This week you got to hear tunes from the Chris Lee-Rodriguez’s debut release, “It Could Happen,” which he self-released on May 3.
- Chris’s solo sound takes on a number of the styles he’s presented throughout his various projects over the years - including expanding into more of his classical Spanish guitar stylings that compliment the more chaotic moments of the album.
- On this episode, you got to hear the tracks, “Written by the Golden Gate Bridge,” “Dream Song,” and “Hurricane is a Taino word.” You can check out the album through the Chris’s Bandcamp page, and through all of the streaming platforms!

67: Kevin Klein (Valleyheart) & Exploring Spirituality through Music

50428404_10155815181866123_6938798702123286528_n.jpg

Kevin Klein is the lead singer and guitarist for the band, Valleyheart. Kevin is a multi-talented musician who has been on a wild musical journey to get to where he is today. Starting out playing in a Christian metalcore band, Exiting the Fall, Kevin eventually veered into more chill outlets as his interests in music evolved. Eventually those efforts would become the Salem, MA-based band, Valleyheart.

During this conversation, Kevin and I dig into his spiritual roots and how they have influenced, defined, and evolved during his life and musical ventures. The conversation also features a bit about the realities of booking DIY tours - playing not only in basements, but in restaurants and boxing rings as well. There’s also a great meditation or two on the influence Sufjan Stevens has had on both my life and Kevin’s life.

This is a fun and thoughtful conversation that I know you will love. AND you get to hear some beautiful music throughout. Valleyheart will be on tour with My Epic this month and into June. The band will embark on a summer run of dates with Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - you can check out their tour dates here!

MUSIC NOTE:
- This week you got to hear tunes from the debut Valleyheart album, “Everyone I’ve Ever Loved,” which was released on December 14 through Rise Records.
- Valleyheart is a brilliant rock band the presents each song with expertly layered lush atmospheres and soundscapes while retaining a perfect amount of raw emotion. Fans of From Indian Lakes, Manchester Orchestra, and Copeland will love these guys.
- On this episode, you got to hear the tracks, “Agnosia,” “Friends in the Foyer,” and “Fourth of July,” which is a cover of the brilliant Sufjan Stevens song. You can check out the album through the band’s Bandcamp page, and through all of the streaming platforms!

66: Shawn Carter & DIY Comedy Debate

66: Shawn Carter &
DIY Comedy Debate

31444576_10155270794986746_3655481570824814592_n.jpg

Shawn Carter is a professional comedian, comedy producer, podcast producer, and all around great guy. Shawn runs comedy shows all over Boston - and has been doing so for well over a decade. He has helped create a fantastic community of comedians in the Boston area that are supportive, creative, and genuinely trying to make each other better. The DIY ethics Shawn exudes are a testament to how hard he works, how much he puts his friends over, and the opportunities he creates for others to thrive.

And if Shawn and I have something in common it’s that we both love projects! We’re both kinda always doing something. Shawn ALSO runs a podcast, Pick A Side Stupid, which is also a weekly live comedy debate show that takes place in Quincy, Mass - right across town from where we live - where two comedians are posed a question and then they improv a response. It’s truly one of the most unique spectacles I’ve seen in a comedy sphere.

Make sure you follow Pick A Side Stupid over at Podbean, iTunes, Stitcher, and really anywhere you get podcasts! You will not regret it! Make sure to join the Facebook group if you’d like to keep up! I will also be a guest on the upcoming Sex episode - so you won’t want to miss that!

And if you’d like to support Shawn’s new comedy album, “100 Problems,” seek it out on iTunes, Spotify, and ANYWHERE you can listen to music or comedy - it’s OUT THERE!

FloridaMan-TropicalDepression_PIC_BALL.jpg

MUSIC NOTE:
- This week you got to hear tunes from the ridiculous new Florida Man LP, “Tropical Depression,” which will be released on May 3 through our friends over at Spartan Records!
- Florida Man's sound may be as unnerving as a Google search of their band name, but on their sophomore full-length Tropical Depression, the Charleston, SC noise-punks harness roaring blasts of distortion and a fascination with the bleaker side of life to create one of the year’s most uncompromising and cathartic releases. Tropical Depression effectively filters the spirits of the most legendary noise rock and post-hardcore scenes -- San Diego’s angular attack (Hot Snakes, No Knife), Seattle’s sheer power (Botch, These Arms Are Snakes), Chicago’s sonic depravity (The Jesus Lizard, Shellac), and DC’s unbridled creativity (Fugazi, Faraquet) -- through the band's unique brand of sweat-soaked southern grime and a dose of hardcore aggression. (Courtesy of Spartan Records)
- On this episode, you got to hear the track, “Brain Cell,” which is a major kick in the face - and it’s the opening track to the album, so you know you’re in for a treat!

65: Katy Weaver & Creating a DIY Photography Career

65: Katy Weaver &
Creating a DIY
Photography Career

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

KatyWeaver-5141.jpg

Katy Weaver is a professional photographer who created a career for herself out of sheer drive and passion for photography. Katy is also one of Craig’s eldest friends from college at Oregon State - the two met at the college newspaper and wound up working together off and on for many years. So they’re pretty familiar and use this episode to catch up a bit while exploring how Katy went from taking photos of Craig’s metal band in college to taking them of hundreds of people and couples from literally all over the world.

Katy is a prolific wedding photographer and provides a great deal of backstory and advice for doing great wedding photography, as well as what it looks like for her to give up the lens as she is currently planning her own wedding. The conversation also veers into some emotional spaces as Katy recently lost one of her best friends - but the memories, much like the photos, are what keep her going even through tragedy. This is one of the most heartfelt and loving conversations featured on this podcast and we hope that truly comes through.

And if you want to check out more from Katy and to see her work, go to KatyWeaver.com or find her on Instagram!

MUSIC NOTE:
- This week you got to hear tunes from the ridiculous new Holy Fawn LP, “Death Spells,” which was released last year through Holy Roar Records and Deathwish Inc in the states. The album was officially re-issued by Triple Crown Records last week so you can expect a lot more greatness from the band!
- Holy Fawn plays loud heavy pretty noises - their words - and it all creates atmospheres that envelope the listener into a world of unknown possibilities. The band allows its songs room to breathe and expand into massive soundscape that began as a mere murmur.
- On this episode, you got to hear the tracks, “Arrows,” and “Drag Me Into the Woods,” which you can access digitally through the band’s bandcamp page or on Spotify and Apple Music. There is bound to be a new vinyl pressing, but you may need to be a little patient.

64: Junior Peña &
the Future of Student Affairs

junior.jpg

This week’s guest is Junior Peña. Junior is the Assistant Director for the Leadership, Engagement, Advocacy, & Diversity Office (LEAD) at Salem State University. Junior and Craig have a great conversation about Junior’s journey through the field of higher education and what keeps him here through all of the ups and downs we experience. Junior went to UMass Boston for undergrad - which is where Craig works - so they had some things to discuss about that connection. The conversation evolves into a larger look at professionalism and the future of the field - as the two of them feel they are the new guard of Student Affairs amid a field that is often resistance to change and the new ways of doing things. Hope you enjoy this one - it was fun to record in person because Junior is currently Craig’s house guest, so they’ve been hanging a lot lately.

MUSIC NOTE:
- This week you got to hear tunes from the fantastic new Sirius Blvck EP, “Moon Talk,” which comes out on March 29 through Near Mint.
- Sirius Blvck is a veteran and a paragon of the Indianapolis hip-hop scene; A scene where you’re as likely to see stagedives as anything else. His music and live performances are stepsiblings to the DIY punk community that occupies many of the same dingy Indiana basements and clubs.
- We played the song, “WHOA’ on the episode this week, which is the lead single for the EP. The EP comes out as a quick follow up to Blvck’s 2018 LP, “major threat.” which was also released through Near Mint.
- You can preorder “Moon Talk” today by visiting Near Mint - there are vinyl copies and cassette copies available! So jump on it right now!

63: Bill Huff &
Prepping for ACPA 2019!

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

bill huff.jpg

This week Craig chats with Bill Huff - who is the Associate Director of Summer housing at Georgetown in DC - about his role as the conference chair for this year’s national ACPA 2019 conference, which takes place in Boston! Bill and Craig discuss Bill’s transition from growing up the midwest to living on the east coast as a professional, and branch into the always hectic work of summer housing and conference support - which is a wild never-ending revolving door of excitement. From there, we explore all of the ins and outs of planning a massive higher education conference, as well as the social justice-informed initiatives that influence all of the work that is done in community at ACPA. Craig will be a caucus leader at the conference this year and we discuss what that looks like as well! We hope you dig this conversation!

DxseXt7UwAAgFyH-320x320.jpg

MUSIC NOTE:
- This week you got to hear tunes from the fantastic new Point North EP, “Retrograde.” The band plays a very refreshing take pop punk that teeters into a lot of mainstream appeal - even reminding us of what might happen if Post Malone had a pop punk band.
- We played the songs, “Never Going Home” and “Gasoline” on the episode this week - both tracks are standouts on the EP, which is a solid five-song release.
- The EP was released by We Are Triumphant last week, and if you like what you heard, check out the album on Spotify, Apple Music, and iTunes!

062: Allie Triglianos on Tattoos in Higher Ed & Femmes in Hardcore

WELCOME BACK TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

ALLIE TRIGS.jpg

This week I chat with Allie Triglianos, who is a Residence Director at Rutgers. Allie has been in Residence Life for YEARS - and the experiences she has amassed along the way have given her a great perspective on how to support students from all walks of life. Allie is a VERY visibly tattooed professional, which plays a massive role in her relationships with students on her campus. It can also create interesting interactions with colleagues and administrators - but sometimes those folks surprise us in their levels of acceptance. We explore that in this episode. Allie also came up in the NY/NJ hardcore scene and has gone to great lengths to dedicate herself to the scene - we dig into this life of hers and how aging a bit changes our perspective on getting into the pit. Hope you enjoy this one!

MUSIC NOTE:
- This week you got to hear tunes from the new Community College LP, which is due out in March through Disposable America!
- We played the songs, “Novacaine,” and ‘Karaoke” on the episode this week - they’re both super chill songs and if you like what you heard, visit disposable-america.com to snag yourself a cassette before the release in March.
- And in case you missed last week’s episode on label owners, make sure you listen to that episode ASAP because it features Dustin Watson, who runs Disposable America.

61: Label Owner Round Up (with Joey Cahill, Jake Sulzer & Dustin Watson)

January 24, 2019  /  Craig Bidiman

61: Label Owner Round Up (with Joey Cahill, Jake Sulzer & Dustin Watson)

WELCOME BACK TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

RECORD LABEL ROUNDUP.png

This week is another special conversation of the podcast - it’s also the firs to include THREE guests. Individually, I sat down with Joey Cahill, Jake Sulzer, and Dustin Watson to discuss their record labels. This was an idea that came to me one day when I coincidentally was planning to hang out with the three dudes one day and was like, “hey! wanna do my podcast?” Glad this episode could come together - granted, a day later than usual, but it’s a good one, so I hope you all dig it!

6131 Records:
Joey Cahill is a founder of 6131 Records, which began in California and is now based in Virginia -- yet, Joey lives in Boston! 6131 Records was chosen for this conversation because it’s a well-established label that has launched acts like Joyce Manner, Cruel Hand, Julien Baker, Touche Amore, and Culture Abuse. The label has evolved, turning out some fantastic new acts like Macseal, Late Bloomer, If you like the conversation, and the tunes (some Kindling for ya!), head over to 6131Records.com to learn more about the label and to pick up some tunes!

download.png

Counter Intuitive Records:
Jake Sulzer started Counter Intuitive Records a few years ago on a whim - he wound up growing the label into a new school emo/garage powerhouse. Jake was chosen for this conversation because his label has been growing exponentially to the point where he just recently obtained his official business license! The label launched the fantastic acts, Oso Oso, Mom Jeans, and Prince Daddy and the Hyena, and has put out some great releases from Retirement Party, Just Friend, oldsoul, and a re-issue of the epic State Lines album, “Hoffman Manor.” If you dig our conversation, check out counterintuitiverecords.com!

disposable.jpg

Disposable America:
Dustin Watson runs Disposable America, which is a DIY label out of Boston - out of his living room, no less. Dustin was chosen for this conversation because his label is pretty quaint and there aren’t many plans to explode it into anything too large. It’s a manageable-sized label that has put out tunes (primarily on cassette) from the likes of Horse Jumper of Love, Lillith, DUMP HIM, Soft Fangs, Infinity Girl, and halfsour. If you like what you heard in this conversation, visit disposable-america.com and get some tunes!

60: Top Albums of 2018
(with Casey & Scott)

WELCOME TO THE SEASON 3 PREMIERE OF THE EDUPUNX PODCAST!

2018 aoty.png

Before we jump back into the world of punk education and the DIY scene, we’re gonna have a full-fledged chat about the top albums of 2018 - as chosen by Craig and two of his friends, Casey Arn and Scott Hayden. All three are in an ongoing 2-3 year long text thread that is all music all the time - and some political banter as well - which is expected. But this discussion is nonstop music! AND you get to hear a bunch of songs from our top albums of the year!

We will be back next week with THREE record label owners to discuss their paths to creating their labels and what they look for in bands and how to sustain something that can be pretty challenging as if grows - or, in one label’s case, intentionally maintain a modest size.

This episode contains the following songs from our top albums of the year (in order):
- “Night Shift,” Lucy Dacus
- “Show You A Body,” Haley Heynderickx
- “Caution,” Tiny Moving Parts
- “Upside Down,” The Story so Far
- “The Aftermath,” Rolo Tomassi
- “What Have We Done,’ Can’t Swim
- “High Pressure,” Turnstile
- “Bellyache,” Spanish Love Songs
- “Calm E,” Culture Abuse
- “Friday Forever,” Trophy Eyes
- “Julia (or, ‘Holy to the LORD’ on the Bells of Horses),” mewithoutYou
- “Lich Prince,” Foxing

WELCOME TO A SPECIAL BONUS UPDATE EPISODE OF THE PODCAST

Hey folks!

Just wanted to share a big time update on my condition - including the original post I share about the incident - which can be found by clicking here!

I’ll also share the text below:

CW: bicycle crash, car accident, images of damages and myself in the hospital, trauma

I’ve never heard the phrase, "it could’ve been much worse," so many times in one evening. Last night, on my bike ride home I was rear ended by a car. I flew into his windshield and then rolled onto the ground. I was able to jump up almost immediately after removing my clipped pedal from the bike - while the other had already dislodged from my foot. When I got up I didn’t feel like anything was in pain and was actually pretty surprised by that, but I was also kind of a little bit in shock.

The shock didn’t last too long, and I eventually calmed down a little bit until I saw the car. I had no idea that I had gone into his windshield because when he hit me I had no idea what was even happening being hit from behind was one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever experienced. As a commuting cyclist, I try to be as safe as possible, and often this means taking up an entire lane while riding in the road. It is my legal right to do so, but sometimes drivers think that this is unnecessary or is an inconvenience. The driver who hit me was very kind, and he stayed with me, supported me, and even held me when I cried. He simply did not see me when changing lanes.

I didn’t feel too scared until I saw the car and that’s when I kind of broke down into a panic. I called Katy, and they showed up pretty quickly and were able to be there and support me in a pretty traumatizing moment. An ambulance showed up, assessed the situation and were honestly amazed that I was cognizant walking around and in good spirits. I was actually joking with them most of the time.

I took an ambulance ride to Boston Medical Center and on the way I was told that the first thing they would do when I got into the trauma ward was that would take all of my clothes off. i was excited by this, and when I was wheeled into the actual room they said, "hey Craig - how are you doing tonight?" and I said, "great! because you’re about to see me naked!"

Throughout the rest of the night I was in pretty good spirits just because I was happy to be alive. I repeated that phrase pretty often throughout the night while they kept repeating the line about how this could’ve been much worse than it was. The doctors and nurses were surprised by how little I was actually harmed by the accident knowing how hard I hit the car.

In all actuality, I likely should have died.

After a series of x-rays, CT scans, and testing all the bruises and charley horses that I developed, we found that the only actual damage done to me was two small fractures in my wrist. Everyone, including me, was very surprised that the only damage was a broken wrist. I still can’t even get over it.

In talking with some of the doctors and the first responding paramedics, it was pretty clear that my backpack is the reason that I didn’t have more damage done specifically to my back, spine, and ribs. I recently purchased a pretty heavy duty Timbuk2 backpack and it has a lot of back support and is pretty damn durable. So I’m pretty darn thankful for my Timbuk2 backpack and I’m probably gonna be sending them a message to thank them and to possibly get a replacement bag because mine got pretty trashed.

The orthopedic doctor thinks that my wrist will be fine within 4 to 6 weeks. Hopefully, it will not require surgery, and he said it was a pretty clean situation, so I hope that that it stays true. Until then, I’m in a cast for the next however many weeks and even after one day I’m feeling okay about it but I can tell it’s quickly going to get old.

Ultimately, I’m just glad to be here because it could’ve been much worse. While I was sitting there, I was offered the opportunity to be a part of a research study on recent trauma victims. So I’m going to be participating in the study over the next year and I’m pretty excited about that because it will give me a lot of opportunities to reflect on what I’m going through. I also got a pretty cool new watch out of it (that tracks my vitals for the study), which is really weird but also great. I’m just trying to make sure that I stay stable minded - especially in regards to the post that I made about my mental health updates yesterday. Just know that I am in good spirits. I have been moving around. I did go get Dunks this morning, and have been spinning records and relaxing as much as possible.

I genuinely have no idea what comes next. I’m putting in a call to my insurance tonight and I’m going to see what we do from here. Nervous about all of that because of how much everything costs when you go to the hospital, and because the doctor already made a joke about me having to start a gofundme – because that’s the state of our healthcare system. (To be fair, i was joking around with the doctors too.) I’m not sure if that’s the route I’m going to need to go, but you know I’m not afraid to ask for help if it comes to that.

I did recently put a few hundred dollars into the bike to get it ready for the winter season and I’m pretty bummed that I lost all that money but hopefully a new bike will come out of this but until then I’m just not going to be riding. which sucks.

Happy to still be here - annoying everyone with my incessant updates about life and all the random shit I do all the time every day. You’re not getting rid of me that easy, life!

I wanted to delay a big post until i was rested, but huge thanks to folks who reached out through mine and Katy’s instagram stories. hated alarming some folks but hey, some updates are better than none.

All that is love is everlasting. we are not our failures, we are love. but love is not enough to keep our friends alive.

Since the incident, I have done a quite a bit of healing - I’ve always been moved into a carbon fiber cast, which is much more enjoyable than the plaster cast I had for three weeks! A big positive if that I do not need surgery! So just a few more weeks and hopefully they will remove the cast and I can start PT.

The bigger issue, as I discuss in the episode, if the brain stuff - the mental trauma that this incident has put me through. I think of the incident everyday. I think of it nonstop when we drive, when I drive, and whenever I see a cyclist. I think of all the what-ifs and what could have happened. It’s terrible, but this is my life now.

Many folks have asked about legal stuff - and yes, I have two lawyers managing everything for me. My medical bills have even already been covered, which is fantastic!

47688767_10104180951406776_7241547948931153920_n.jpg

During the episode, I even take a moment to thank the great folks at Timbuk2 for replacing my backpack that was damaged in my recent accident. they worked with Katy to get it to me and were super supportive in knowing their product quite literally saved a customer’s life. they EVEN gave Katy a new pack for being such a supportive partner!

I’ll be a Timbuk2 supporter for life because I owe them mine. can’t wait to crack this open once I have full use of both hands! make sure you visit their page and timbuk2.com for some sick deals during the holidays!!

Lastly, wear a helmet. Life comes at you fast.
Thanks for all your support! We will be back soon!

(Pleasure Pie) &
DIY Sex Positivity

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

Nicole Mazzeo runs the DIY sex-positive organization, Pleasure Pie. While Nicole was once located in Boston, she now resides oversees - in the Netherlands - which makes this our second international conversation of the year! We actually had this conversation at the beginning of October - before the podcast was corrupted, and before I was hit by a car last week. So it’s good to know that a lot has changed between then and now. But the conversation is full of fun reflection and perspectives on sex education, destigmatizing sexual health, and what it takes to be incredibly neurotic and keep up with so many projects.

Pleasure Pie is a small activist organization based in Boston, MA. Its efforts center around sex positivity, body positivity, and positivity about other good things. It makes alternative sexuality education materials (including zines, illustrations, and publications) and experiences (events, conversations, and workshops). Make sure to dig around pleasurepie.org to learn more about the fantastic work that Nicole and her crew do. And visit the Pleasure Pie Etsy shop as well and get yourself, or your students, a bunch of goodies!

58: Francesca Impastato (Macseal) & the Representation of Queer Women Drummers

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

IMG_3767.JPG

We’re back after a month away with a chat with Macseal drummer, Francesca Impastato. Francesca is a graduate of Berklee College of Music - where she focused on drums and music business, as well as instrument repair - of which, she has a fantastically misogynistic story to share. Francesca began drumming at the age of 5 - and not just hitting the drums with sticks, but actually finding the rhythm and beat and playing from there. One could say she was born to play the drums.

Francesca and I sat down in my practice space in Allston, Mass on Sunday while a jam band was rocking out above us to chat about everything that came to our minds. It was great timing because Francesca was only in Boston for a short period of time before heading down to New York to prepare for Macseal’s weekender tour. So we hope you dig this conversation - cuz we had a lot of fun having it!

MUSIC NOTE:
- This week we shared tunes from the new Macseal EP, “Map it Out,” which comes out Friday! You can get a digital copy or cassette of the album through 6131 Records!
- Macseal is a brilliant new school indie emo band that has made a big wave through multiple DIY tours up and down the east coast and across the country. The band is poised to be a big hit with a full-length album on the horizon in another year or so!
- In this episode, we played the songs, “Sure thing, Shelly,” “Harry,” and “Next to You.”
- Also, all of the band’s music is already available FOR DOWNLOAD on their bandcamp site, so you have no reason to not download this album right now!

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

dustin ramsdell.jpg

Dustin Ramsdell is the Higher Ed Geek. Dustin hosts a podcast called The Higher Ed Geek Podcast - and he runs the ConnectEDU podcast network. He also works in the eduTech realm - where he is the Student Affairs Lead for Noodle Education. Like me, Dustin got his start wanting to be in secondary education, but eventually found his way into student affairs - which he left not long ago. Yet, their paths have crossed over the years, and while Dustin has (temporarily) left traditional college campuses, the two used this opportunity to catch up!

This is a special week because Dustin and I decided to team up for a dual-episode! So you get to hear me interview Dustin on this podcast and if you’d like (and you SHOULD), you can head over to HIS podcast and listen to him interview me about all of the things I geek out for! We hope you enjoy this double-header podcast week!

ADVERTISING NOTE:
- This week, we hyped up Dustin Ramsdell's podcast, the Higher Ed Geek Podcast! Dustin used to host the Student Affairs Collective Podcast and he's been off on his own for over a year now, seeking out the geeks in the field of Higher Education!
- The Higher Ed Geek Podcast is live on all streaming sties, so give him a follow, and subscribe to the podcast - and in the meantime, while you wait for it to launch, you can peruse Dustin's site to see all the cool stuff he has done throughout his career so far.

MUSIC NOTE:
- This week we shared tunes from the new Slow Crush album, “Aurora,” which came out on September 28 through Holy Roar Records! If you’re in Europe, you can get a vinyl copy, CD, or digital copy of the album through Holy Roar or for folks like me in AMERICA, you can get your copies through Deathwish Records!
- Slow Crush is a fantastic fuzzy shoegaze band from Belgium - the band has been building on its impressive 2017 EP, “Ease,” which gained them a great amount of attention in the scene and now they’ve fully immersed their listeners in even more lush and inviting tunes.
- In this episode, we played the songs, “Glow,” “Aurora,” and “Tremble.”
- Also, all of the band’s music is already available FOR DOWNLOAD on their bandcamp site, so you have no reason to not download this album right now!

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

Slocum is the tall guy on the far right.

Slocum is the tall guy on the far right.

Dylan Slocum is the lead singer and guitarist for the punk rock band, Spanish Love Songs. Dylan grew up playing baseball and was even a collegiate pitcher - which gave him a fascinating look into the college experience from the standpoint of a student athlete. Dylan and I broke down the lack of self-care that exists for a majority of student athletes, and how Dylan eventually developed his own path through education and even the punk rock realm.

Dylan and I sat down in my kitchen after a hefty Red Robin meal and got right down to business. The conversation often meanders through various life experiences - including exploring education options and opportunities throughout college while eventually finding worth in making music. And then there’s a slight detour into a cheesecake taste test (not brought to you by Cheesecake Factory)!

Spanish Love Songs is on the rise right now and the band is doing some really great stuff, so make sure to check them out beyond this interview! Enjoy!

MUSIC NOTE:

James Ikeda is a high school History teacher, DIY musician, and an all-around brilliant human being. James is the type of person to have a lot of projects and ideas and energy to do cool creative work outside of the classroom. He also does some great work in the classroom - but through a much different approach. That’s the thing about James - he’s able to do both; the bit of being an authentic professional teacher, and the bit of being an authentic punk musician. And as you’ll learn in this conversation, everything is a bit.

So James came over to Craig and Katy’s place to sit down and chat for a couple of hours - it’s a lively, fun, and highly informative conversation that has many twists, turns, laughs, and inside jokes that develop over the course of the chat. We hope you enjoy this one - and know that there is A LOT more! So stay tuned because in a few days, we will share an extra episode that demonstrates what happens when Craig and James left the microphone on.

Dawn Graham is a punk educator, a zine creator and distributor and one of my favorite people! Dawn works with Boston young adults as they interact with and learn more about current technologies. They’re an endlessly talented and devoted creator of zines - and you get to hear all about how they found their gateway into zines at a very young age. So zines are in Dawn’s blood!

Through Stay Kind!, Dawn tables and distributes their own work as well as the work of others that they support and want to share knowledge and creativity of throughout their travels and distribution work.

Craig and Dawn sat down early on Saturday morning to chat about all things punk, zines, and education - there are plenty of laughs, critical analysis of the current political climate, and just overall good hangs. Hope you dig this chat as much as we did!

Andi Macone is the New England Youth & Young Adult Program Manager for Phoenix Multisport, which is an active sober community dedicated to supporting those in recovery from addiction and substance use disorder. Andi is also Craig's former colleague at UMass Boston. The two have had a wonderfully supportive relationship over the last two years. Craig recently started attending classes at The Phoenix (primarily at the suggest and support of Andi) and has already felt incredibly welcomed by the community. The Phoenix fosters human connections in mental, physical and spiritual fitness, which is a powerful way to rebuild wounded bodies and spirits, and restore hope.
